Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette and Scented Water: the Differences

🌸 Why the name on the label changes everything

Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, Scented Water: behind these labels lies more than a question of style — there is a real difference, the concentration of fragrance oils. Understanding it helps you choose the right perfume, make it last longer and spend wisely. So let's look at what really changes from one version to another.

🧪 The concentrations, from the most intense to the lightest

The amount of fragrance oils (the essences) dissolved in alcohol determines a fragrance's intensity and longevity. Here are the main categories, from the most concentrated to the freshest.

  • 🏆 Extrait de Parfum: the highest concentration (around 20–30%). A few drops are enough, and the longevity is remarkable.
  • Eau de Parfum (EdP): around 15–20%. The best balance of intensity and lasting power, ideal all year round.
  • Eau de Toilette (EdT): around 5–15%. Fresh and versatile, perfect for daytime and warmer months.
  • Eau de Cologne: around 2–5%. Light and refreshing, it needs to be reapplied more often.
  • Scented Water: the most delicate (usually below 3%). A soft scented touch for the body, ideal after a shower.

⏱️ Longevity, sillage and how to apply perfume

The higher the concentration, the longer the fragrance stays on the skin and the wider its trail, known as sillage. As a rule of thumb, an Extrait can last many hours, an Eau de Parfum most of the day, an Eau de Toilette a few hours. To make it last: apply it on moisturised skin and on warm spots (wrists, neck, behind the ears) and don't rub your wrists together, as the heat breaks the most delicate notes.

🛍️ How to choose: skin, season and occasion

There is no single best concentration: it all depends on how you want to wear your perfume. For work and hot days, an Eau de Toilette or a scented water are ideal — fresh and discreet; for the evening or winter, an Eau de Parfum or an Extrait are more enveloping. Remember, too, that the same fragrance behaves differently from person to person: drier skin holds scent less, so it may be worth choosing a higher concentration.
