Scalabrone Bolgheri DOC Rosato is the flagship rosé of Tenuta Guado al Tasso by Marchesi Antinori, made from a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, and Merlot grown in alluvial silty-clay soils rich in pebbles, in the heart of the Bolgheri appellation. Bold, intense aromas, ripe raspberry and pomegranate fruit, delicate spices, and coastal minerality. A structured rosé, far from the genre's conventional lightness.

The story of Scalabrone

The name Scalabrone comes from a bandit of the same name who roamed this area of the Tuscan Maremma in the early 19th century, a legendary figure on the Bolgheri coast, respected by locals for his indomitable character. The vineyard bears his name, and the wine reflects his character: bold, intense, and distinctive. This is no timid rosé.

The Bolgheri microclimate, with the sea just a few kilometers away, marked temperature swings, and a constant sea breeze, gives the blend a complex aromatic profile rarely found in rosés from central Italy: ripe fruit balanced by refreshing acidity, saline minerality, and a persistent finish.

Recommended pairings

Scalabrone Bolgheri DOC Rosato is a structured rosé for meals, not just a simple aperitif. Ideal pairings include seafood and land-based appetizers, spaghetti allo scoglio, shrimp risotto, grilled and baked fish, mixed fried seafood, white meat, roast chicken, and gourmet pizzas. The tannic structure of Syrah and Cabernet also makes it suitable for lightly spiced dishes and Mediterranean cuisine.

For a complete Tuscan pairing: serve Scalabrone with Colonnata IGP Lardo as a starter, then with grilled Tuscan sausage. This Bolgheri rosé also pairs well with full-flavored Tuscan cured meats.

FAQ

What is Bolgheri DOC Rosato?
The Bolgheri DOC appellation on the Tuscan Tyrrhenian coast in the province of Livorno is famous for its great international red wines. Bolgheri Rosato is made from the same Bordeaux and Mediterranean grape varieties, Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah, and Grenache, with rosé winemaking that preserves freshness and varietal aromas. It is structurally more complex than rosés from central Italy.

Who are the Antinoris and what is Guado al Tasso?
Marchesi Antinori is one of Italy’s oldest winemaking families, with 26 generations dating back to 1385. The Guado al Tasso Estate in Bolgheri is one of their flagship properties in the Tuscan Maremma, famous for Bolgheri Superiore Guado al Tasso, Vermentino, and this Scalabrone Rosato.

At what temperature should Scalabrone be served?
The ideal temperature is 10-12°C, slightly higher than for a white wine, to preserve the blend’s aromatic complexity. Open 10 minutes before serving.

Is it a rosé for aperitifs or meals?
It is mainly a structured rosé for meals. The Syrah and Cabernet Franc in the blend give it a light but noticeable tannic quality that stands up to fish and white meat dishes. It also works as a special aperitif, but is at its best at the table.
